"Net 2189" with HP27247A Adapter (99504)

When a "net stop workstation" is issued at an MS-DOS client, the HP2724A
adapter issues a net error 2189: The service cannot be controlled in its
present state.
NOTE: If your system includes HP EtherTwist model HP27247A adapters and
LAN Manager 2.2, see MORE INFORMATION below.
CAUSE
This message means that the service is not currently accepting requests.
If the service is starting it can't process requests until it is fully
started. If the case of stopping an MS-DOS workstation, another program is
preventing the workstation from stopping.
RESOLUTION
Stop or close all other programs, then type:

The above suggestions do not work with HP EtherTwist model HP27247A
adapters and LAN Manager 2.2.
Previous versions of LAN Manager let you choose the HPLAN$ driver for
HP27247A adapters, but in LAN Manager 2.2 the choice is HP EtherTwist 8/16
adapters and the driver is HPLANB$. The HPLANB$ works fine with the A
series cards until you issue a net stop workstation, at which point the
system hangs with a net error 2189.
The only workaround is to copy the HPLAN$ driver manually from a previous
version of LAN Manager and edit CONFIG.SYS and PROTOCOL.INI accordingly.
