Error message when you try to use a gallery in Word 2007: "The Office Open XML file Building Blocks.dotx cannot be opened" (925175)

SYMPTOMS

You select a gallery on the Ribbon in Microsoft Office Word 2007. When you try to insert one of the elements in that gallery, Word 2007 may stop responding or close unexpectedly. Additionally, you receive the following error message:
The Office Open XML file Building Blocks.dotx cannot be opened because there are problems with the contents.
If you click OK in the error message, you may receive the following error message:
Word found unreadable content in "Building Blocks.dotx". Do you want to recover the contents of this document? If you trust the source of this document, click Yes.
If you click Yes in the error message, you may receive the following error message:
Word cannot open this document template. (drive_letter:\...\1033\Building Blocks.dotx)
After the changes to the Building Blocks.dotx template are saved when you exit Word 2007, you may still experience these symptoms when you restart Word 2007 and then try to use a gallery.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the Building Blocks.dotx template is damaged or corrupted.

here are two copies of the Building Blocks.dotx template. One copy is stored in your user data folders. The other copy is stored in the Document Parts folder in the Office 12 folder. Typically the copy that is stored in your user data folders is the copy that is damaged. However, both copies could be damaged.

The following Ribbon galleries are affected by this problem:
  • Autotext
  • Bibliographies
  • Cover Pages
  • Equations
  • Footers
  • Headers
  • Page Numbers
  • Quick Parts
  • Table of Contents
  • Tables
  • Text Boxes
  • Watermarks

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, try to copy the Building Blocks.dotx template in the 2007 Microsoft Office Document Parts folder over the damaged copy of Building Blocks.dotx template in the user data folders. You can also remove both copies of the Building Blocks.dotx template and then repair 2007 Office to restore the Building Blocks.dotx template.

Note When you rename the Building Blocks.dotx template, your Ribbon galleries will be reset to their default contents. Therefore, we strongly recommend that you not delete your Building Blocks.dotx template.

Method 1: Copy a new version of the template

To copy a new version of the template, follow these steps:

Note These steps are for the English version of Word 2007. Additionally, these steps refer to the language ID 1033. Other languages will use a different language ID.
  1. Exit Word 2007.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type ""%userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Document Building Blocks\1033", and then click OK.
  3. Right-click Building Blocks.dotx, and then click Rename.
  4. Rename the file to Building Blocks.OLD.
  5. Leave the Document Building Blocks\1033 folder open, click Start, click Run, type "%programfiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12\Document Parts\1033", and then click OK.
  6. Right-click Building Blocks.dotx, and then click Copy.
  7. Close the Document Parts\1033 folder.
  8. In the Document Building Blocks\1033 folder, click Edit, and then click Paste. A new copy of the Building Blocks.dotx is copied to the folder.

Method 2: Repair 2007 Office

To repair 2007 Office, follow these steps:
  1. Exit all 2007 Office programs.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type ""%userprofile%\Application Data\Microsoft\Document Building Blocks\1033", and then click OK.
  3. Right-click Building Blocks.dotx, and then click Rename.
  4. Rename the file to Building Blocks.OLD.
  5. Click Start, click Run, type "%programfiles%\Microsoft Office\Office12\Document Parts\1033", and then click OK.
  6. Right-click Building Blocks.dotx, and then click Rename.
  7. Rename the file to Building Blocks.OLD.
  8. Close both folders.
  9. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl, and the click OK.
  10. In the Currently installed programs list, click the version of 2007 Office that is installed on the computer. Alternatively, click the version of Word 2007 if you have the stand-alone version installed on the computer.
  11. Click Change, click Repair, and then click Continue.
