FIX: Error message when you try to open a file attachment in a message that is generated by the sp_send_dbmail procedure in SQL Server 2005: "This file is not in a recognizable format" (924345)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use Microsoft Office to open a file attachment, you may receive the following error message:
This file is not in a recognizable format
This problem occurs when the message is generated by the sp_send_dbmail procedure in Microsoft SQL Server 2005.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the sp_send_dbmail procedure in SQL Server 2005 creates attachment files in an unrecognizable Unicode format.

RESOLUTION

After you apply the following hotfix, the sp_send_dbmail procedure generates files in a recognizable Unicode format.

Hotfix Information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next SQL Server 2005 service pack that contains this hotfix.
