Microsoft has released the Office XP Proofing Tools Kit post-Service Pack 3 hotfix package for Microsoft Office XP Proofing Tools Kit.

INTRODUCTION

This article describes the Microsoft Office XP Proofing Tools Kit issue that is fixed in the hotfix package that is dated August 10, 2006.

Issues that the hotfix package fixes

This hotfix package fixes the following issue that was not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
  • On August 1, 2006, the new German Spelling Reform rules went into effect for Germany, for Switzerland, and for Austria. These rules were proposed by the Council for German Orthography on August 1, 2005. The rules were adopted by the Standing Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs (KMK) on March 2, 2006. And, the rules were confirmed by the Council of Minister Presidents on March 30, 2006.

    In compliance with these new rules, a new German spelling checker for Microsoft Office XP Proofing Tools Kit was created. This hotfix package contains a new German spelling checker that is in compliance with the new German Spelling Reform rules.

Microsoft scanned this file for viruses. Microsoft used the most current virus-detection software that was available on the date that the file was posted. The file is stored on security-enhanced servers that help prevent any unauthorized changes to the file.
To download the update, follow these steps:
  1. Click Save to save the officexp-KB923885-DEU.exe file to the selected folder.
  2. In Microsoft Windows Explorer, double-click officexp-KB923885-DEU.exe.
  3. Click Yes to accept the License Agreement.
  4. In the Type the location where you want to place the extracted files box, type c:\923885, and then click OK.
  5. Click Yes when you are prompted to create the folder.
Client update (single computer)

After you have downloaded the file, follow these steps to install the client update:
  1. In Windows Explorer, locate the c:\923885 folder, and then double-click Ptk.msp.
  2. Follow the steps to install the update.
Note After you install the update, you cannot remove it. To revert to a previous installation that does not include the update, you must remove Office XP Proofing Tools. Then, install Office XP Proofing Tools again from the original CD.

Administrative update

If you installed Office XP Proofing Tools from a server location, the server administrator must update the server location with the administrative public update. The administrator must then deploy that update to your computer.

If you are the server administrator, follow these steps:
  1. In Windows Explorer, locate the C:\923885 folder, and then double-click PTK_readme.txt.
  2. Follow the steps in the PTK_readme.txt file to install and to deploy the hotfix.

Prerequisites

The following list contains prerequisites for the hotfix package:
  • The optimized version of this hotfix is a post-Microsoft Office XP Service Pack 3 hotfix. To install the hotfix, you must have Office XP Service Pack 3 installed. For more information about Office XP SP3, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • The optimized version of this hotfix requires Microsoft Windows Installer version 2.0 or a later version. For more information about the Windows Installer requirement, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  • The full-file version of this hotfix package is also the administrative version of this hotfix package. The full-file version of this hotfix package is a post-Office XP Service Pack 3 hotfix package. To install the hotfix package, you must have Office XP Service Pack 3 installed.

You do not have to restart your computer after you apply this hotfix.

This hotfix is not replaced by any later hotfix.
