SYMPTOMS

When you try to play an original Xbox game on an Xbox 360 console, you receive the following error message:
This original Xbox game has encountered a problem and cannot continue.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when the Xbox 360 console experiences a runtime error when you try to use an original Xbox game on an Xbox 360 console. A runtime error can occur for many reasons. Typically, a runtime error occurs if the disc is dirty, smudged, scratched, or damaged.

THINGS TO TRY

  1. Verify that the game is on the approved backward compatibility list. To do this, visit the following Xbox Web site:

    http://www.xbox.com/en-US/games/backwardcompatibilitygameslist.htm

  2. Examine the disc for physical defects, smudges, or scratches.
  3. Clean the disc, and then try again. Use the following recommendations for cleaning and handling Xbox game discs:
    • Hold disc by the edges without touching the surface with your fingers.
    • Clean the disk by using a soft, clean cloth. Lightly wipe the disc from the center outward.
    • Do not use solvents or chemicals to clean the disc.
  4. If you have an original Xbox console, try to play the game in the original Xbox console. If you still receive an error message, contact Xbox technical support.
