Error message when you try to send a fax with a cover sheet from a Windows XP-based computer: "The fax preview cannot be displayed" (922375)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to send a fax with a cover sheet from a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, you receive the following error message:
The fax preview cannot be displayed
However, you can receive faxes without any problems.

CAUSE

This problem may occur in one of the following scenarios:
  • The fax cover sheet is corrupted.
  • The TIF and TIFF files are not registered to open by using Windows Picture and Fax Viewer.
  • The installation of Fax Service is corrupted.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this problem, follow these steps.

Note Check to see whether the problem is resolved after you complete each of these steps.
  1. Select a different cover sheet for the fax.
  2. Make sure that the TIF and TIFF files are registered to open by using Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type explorer in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
    3. On the File Types tab, locate TIF and TIFF in the Extensions list under Registered file types. Make sure that TIF and TIFF are registered to open with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer in the File Types list. If they are not registered to open with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, click Change, click Windows Picture and Fax Viewer, and then click OK.
  3. Remove Fax Service, and then add it again.

    To remove Fax Service, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. In the left pane, click Add/Remove Windows Components.
    3. In the Components box, click to clear the Fax Services check box, click OK, and then click Next.
    4. Click Finish.
    To add Fax Service again, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. In the left pane, click Add/Remove Windows Components.
    3. In the Components box, click to select the Fax Services check box, click OK, and then click Next.
    4. Click Finish.
  4. Make sure that the FILE: printer port is listed in the registry. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit in the Open box, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Ports

      Note If the FILE: registry entry is not listed in the right pane, continue with steps c, d, and e, to create the FILE: registry entry and to restart the computer. If the FILE: registry entry is listed in the right pane, close Registry Editor, and then go to step 5.
    3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click String Value.
    4. Type FILE:, and then press ENTER.
    5. Close Registry Editor and restart the computer.
  5. If you still cannot send a fax with a cover sheet, check Event Viewer for any related error messages that may help you troubleshoot.
