You cannot print an embedded document that is protected by Information Rights Management (IRM) in Word 2003 (922100)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Word 2003

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You try to print an embedded Microsoft Office Word 2003 document that is open in Internet Explorer.
  • The Word 2003 document is protected by Information Rights Management (IRM).
  • You have the print permission for this document.
In this scenario, you cannot print the embedded document.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the print command is sent to Word 2003 through Internet Explorer. Internet Explorer sends the command to Word through Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE). DDE requires that you have the object model right for the Word document. If you do not have the object model right, the print command is blocked.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, save the document on the local computer. Then, print the document.

Or, you can adjust the Windows Explorer settings so that the Word document does not open in Internet Explorer. Instead, the document opens in Word. To do this, follow these steps:
  1. Open Windows Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options.
  3. On the File types tab, click DOC, and then click Advanced.
  4. Click to clear the Browse in same windows check box, and then click OK two times.

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
