SYMPTOMS

You try to install Microsoft Office Communications Server 2007 on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer. For some reason, the installation cannot finish. When this behavior occurs, the installation should roll back the changes. However, in some cases, the rollback operation may stop responding. In these cases, the unsuccessful installation is not removed.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a deadlock in Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI).

RESOLUTION

The hotfix that is described in this article prevents the deadlock in WMI. Therefore, the problem that is described in the "Symptoms" section does not occur.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows Server 2003 service pack that contains this hotfix.

Restart requirement

You must restart the computer after you apply this hotfix.
