Disk space is reduced by lb*.tmp and gthrsvcflt*_.eml files in the Drive_Letter:\SystemRoot\Temp directory on the server that is running Exchange 2000 Server (919093)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Enterprise Server
  • Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server

SYMPTOMS

You experience a reduction of disk space on the drive on which you have Microsoft Windows installed. When you examine the Drive_Letter:\%Windir%\Temp directory, you find many files that have the following names:
  • the lb*.tmp file
  • the gthrsvcflt*_.eml file
Additionally, you will find e-mail attachments dumped in the following folder:

Drive_Letter:\%Windir%\Temp\gthsvc

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you are running the Full-Text Indexing service in Microsoft Exchange 2000 Server. The Microsoft Search Service may time out when it processes large MIME body parts during the indexing process. This behavior causes the working temporary files to be left behind in the temporary directory.

RESOLUTION

Follow these steps to resolve this problem:
  • Install the hotfix that is mentioned in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base article:

812387 Microsoft Search Service leaves .xls files in systemroot\Temp\Gthrsvc

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Search\1.0\Gathering Manager

    Name: DebugFilters
    Value type: DWORD
    Value data: 1
