Updates may be incorrectly reported as "Installed" instead of as "Not applicable" in software update programs (917496)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Server Update Services
  • Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 2.0

SYMPTOMS

Software update programs and detection utilities may display the incorrect status for updates that are not applicable. Updates may be incorrectly reported as Installed instead of as Not applicable. For example, if the update that is documented in Microsoft Knowledge Base article 911565 (Microsoft Security Bulletin MS06-005) is not applicable, Microsoft Windows Software Update Services may incorrectly display the status as Installed.

Note This issue does not affect security. If an update is installed or required, the status is correctly reported. Only updates that do not apply to the computer may be affected by this issue.

CAUSE

This issue may occur when the following conditions are both true:
  • You are using a software update program or a detection utility that uses the Windows Update Agent (WUA) API.
  • The update applies to multiple versions of a Windows component. These multiple versions all apply to one version of Windows. For example, updates for Microsoft Windows Media Player 8, Windows Media Player 9, and Windows Media Player 10 all apply to Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1).
Scanning utilities that use the WUA API include the following programs:
  • Windows Server Update Services (WSUS)
  • Microsoft Systems Management Server (SMS) 2003 Inventory Tool for Microsoft Updates (ITMU)
  • Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA)

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
