The audio features of a chat in Groove use the Microsoft Waveform Input API for recording. The audio features of a chat in Groove use the Digital Signal Processor (DSP) Group TrueSpeech voice codec for compression.

The compressed audio packets are transmitted by using standard Groove communications. The transmission uses a packet duration of approximately 125 milliseconds.

On the receiving side, Groove Virtual Office 3.x uses 1-second buffering, and Groove Workspace 2.x uses 500-millisecond buffering. Groove does not use buffering on the sending side. However, buffering may be added by the various communication layers. Additionally, buffering may be affected by firewalls and by other factors.

A chat in Groove uses Microsoft DirectSound for playback. To calibrate sound quality, run the Audio Tuning Wizard from the Options menu in a chat.
