INTRODUCTION

This article discusses why the outgoing data counter displays a larger volume of data being transmitted after you add data to a workspace in Groove.

MORE INFORMATION

In Groove, the data counter displays the number of bytes that are being transmitted. Consider the following scenario. Your workspace has only one other member. That member uses their Groove account on only one computer. In this situation, the bytes that are transmitted are equal to the compressed size of the data that you add to the workspace.

However, the compressed data is transmitted one time for each remote endpoint of the workspace, where an endpoint is a particular member on a particular computer. Therefore, the data will be transmitted multiple times if one of the following conditions is true:
  • Your workspace has more than one other member.
  • One or more of the other workspace members runs Groove on more than one computer.
For example, assume that you add a 30 megabyte (MB) file that compresses to 20 MB. If the following conditions are true, the 20 MB of data is transmitted three times:
  • There are three other members in the workspace.
  • Each member is running Groove on one computer.
In this case, the data counter displays 60 MB for the data that is being transmitted. The 60 MB that appears in the data counter is the total number for the three separate transmissions. These three separate transmissions occur for the three members that are in the workspace.

The data will also be transmitted three times if the following conditions are true:
  • There are two other members in the workspace.
  • One member is running Groove on two computers. The other member is running Groove on one computer.
In both cases, the workspace has three other endpoints.
