Xbox 360: Error message: "This Original Xbox Game Is Not Supported on your Xbox 360 console" (916112)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to play an original Xbox game on an Xbox 360 console, you receive the following error message:
This Original Xbox Game Is Not Supported on your Xbox 360 console. An update to support this game may be available. For more information go to www.xbox.com/games

CAUSE

This issue occurs when you try to play an original Xbox game that is not supported on the Xbox 360 platform or the console is not signed in to Xbox Live to allow the game to check the availability of an update.
