SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You have a Microsoft Word document from the Groove Files tool open in Microsoft Word. Then, Microsoft Windows shuts down while you still have the Word document open. In this scenario, you may lose any changes that you made to the Word document in Groove when Windows shuts down.

CAUSE

If Windows shuts down while programs are still running, Windows selects the order in which those programs are closed. If Windows closes Groove before it closes Word, there is no way for the changes that were made in Word to be saved back to Groove. Those changes are lost when you open Groove again. This behavior occurs because Groove cleans up the temporary files that were locked when it shut down. The same problem may occur with other editing programs.

WORKAROUND

To resolve this problem, periodically save your changes in Word. If you do not have the opportunity to save your changes, follow these steps to recover the data:
  1. Restart Windows, but do not restart Groove.
  2. Start Word, and then open the file that you want to recover from the recently used files list.
  3. On the File menu, click Save As, and then select another location for the file.
  4. Start Groove.
  5. Open the old version of the file from Groove, and then replace the contents of the open file that has the contents from the saved file.
