You cannot remove the Identity Management for UNIX Administration Pack on a Windows XP Professional-based computer (914221)

SYMPTOMS

You remove the Identity Management for UNIX (IDMU) Administration Pack on a Microsoft Windows XP Professional-based computer by using Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel. After you do this, you reinstall the IDMU Administration Pack on the same computer. However, you cannot remove the IDMU Administration Pack again by using Add or Remove Programs.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because of a problem with the IDMU Administration Pack installer.

RESOLUTION

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Unregister the Nisprop.dll file. To do this, follow these steps:
    1. Click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
    2. At the command prompt, move to the following folder:

      %windir%\Idmusnap

      Note The %windir% folder is the folder where you installed Microsoft Windows.
    3. Type regsvr32 /u nisprop.dll, and then press ENTER.
    4. Type exit, and then press ENTER to close the Command Prompt window.
  2. Delete the IDMU Administration Pack files in the %windir%\Idmusnap folder.
  3. Delete the IDMU registry key. To do this, follow these steps.

    For computers that are running x86-based versions of Windows XP Professional
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP\SPnumber\idmu

      Note number is the service pack number of your current installation.
    3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes.
    4. Exit Registry Editor.
    For computers that are running x64-based versions of Windows XP Professional
    1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
    2. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

      HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Updates\Windows XP Version 2003\SPnumber\idmu

      Note number is the service pack number of your current installation.
    3. On the Edit menu, click Delete, and then click Yes.
    4. Exit Registry Editor.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

To avoid this issue, you must manually delete the IDMU registry key every time that you remove the IDMU Administration Pack.
