Additionally, Windows OneCare displays an action item that indicates that signatures for the antivirus program are out-of-date.
Note When there is an action that you must perform, Windows Live OneCare displays an Action to Take item at the top of the Windows Live OneCare main page. Each Action to Take item contains a description of the associated issue. Each item also contains a button or link that you must click to perform the action or to learn more about the issue.CAUSEThis problem occurs if network connectivity issues prevent the signatures for the antivirus program from being automatically updated. RESOLUTION
To resolve this problem, use the following methods in the order in which they are presented. Method 1: Troubleshoot Internet connectivity issues
Make sure that you are connected to the Internet. Signatures for antivirus programs are not automatically updated if there are any Internet connectivity issues.

By default, Windows Live OneCare automatically checks for updates when the computer is connected to the Internet.
If you do not receive a notification that the updates are installed successfully, go to Method 2. Method 2: Disable the "Automatically Detect Settings" option in Microsoft Internet Explorer
To disable the Automatically Detect Settings option in Internet Explorer, follow these steps: - Start Internet Explorer.
- On the Internet Explorer Tools menu, click Internet Options.
- Click the Connections tab, and then click LAN Settings.
- Click to clear the Automatically detect settings check box, and then click OK.
- Click OK to close the Internet Options dialog box.
- Start Windows Live OneCare.
- Under Protection Plus, click Check for updates.
A notification window appears. The notification message states that Windows Live OneCare is checking for updates. If you do not receive a notification that the updates are installed successfully, go to Method 3.
Method 3: Uninstall third-party firewall programs
To uninstall third-party firewall programs, follow these steps: - Click Start, click Run, type appwiz.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
- In the Currently installed programs list, look for any third-party firewall programs that are installed on the computer, and then remove these programs.
- Restart the computer
- Start Windows Live OneCare.
- Under Protection Plus, click Check for updates.
A notification window appears. The notification message states that Windows Live OneCare is checking for updates. If you do not receive a notification that the updates are installed successfully, go to Method 4.
Method 4: If the computer is behind a proxy server or router, connect the computer directly to the InternetWarning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk. If the computer is behind a proxy server or router, connect the computer directly to the Internet. Then, scan for updates. If you do not know whether the network uses a router or a proxy server, go to Method 5. If you use a proxy server, make sure that you update the proxy server information for Windows Live OneCare in the registry. To do this, follow these steps: - Click Start, click Run, type regedit
in the Open box, and then click OK
- Locate and then click the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\WinSS\{050CCCCD-0F02-4E92-8B32-FC8A81C68420} - In the right pane, double-click IEProxy.
- Make sure that the Value data box contains the correct proxy server information.
Note
If the Web address or the IP address of the proxy server is unavailable, contact the network administrator. - Exit Registry Editor.
If you do not receive a notification that the updates are installed successfully, go to Method 5.
Method 5: Reset the permissions on the Microsoft Windows OneCare Live folders
To reset the permissions on the WindowsOneCare Live folders, follow these steps: - Click Start, click Run, type cmd
in the Open box, and then click OK.
- At the command prompt, type net stop winss, and then press ENTER.
- Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
cacls "%programfiles%\Microsoft Windows OneCare Live" /T /G administrators:F - Type Y
when you are prompted for confirmation, and then press ENTER.
- Type net start winss, and then press ENTER.
- Start Windows Live OneCare.

Under Protection Plus, click Check for updates .
If you do not receive a notification that the updates are installed successfully, go to Method 6.
Method 6: Reinstall Windows Live OneCare
To remove and then reinstall Windows Live OneCare, follow these steps: - Click Start, click Control Panel, and then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
- Click Change or Remove Programs.
- Under Currently installed programs and updates, click Windows Live OneCare, and then click Change/Remove.
- In the Windows Live OneCare Uninstall dialog box, click Uninstall.
Note
If you are prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes. - Restart the computer after Windows Live OneCare is uninstalled.
- Open Windows Explorer, and then locate the following folder: Note
If you installed the program on a different drive or folder, substitute the name of that drive or folder in this step.
- Locate and then right-click the Microsoft Windows OneCare Live folder, and then click Delete.
- Click Yes to confirm the deletion of this folder.
- Reinstall Windows Live OneCare by using the Windows Live OneCare CD-ROM. Or, reinstall Windows Live OneCare from the Windows Live OneCare Web site.
After you reinstall Windows Live OneCare, make sure that the color of the Windows Live OneCare icon on the computer's taskbar is green.
