INTRODUCTION

On a Microsoft Windows Mobile-based device, you can open and modify a Microsoft Word document that was created on a computer. However, Word Mobile does not fully support some features, such as revision marks and passwords. Some of the data and formatting may be lost when you save the document on the Windows Mobile-based device.

Unsupported features in Word Mobile

The following features are not supported in Word Mobile:
  • Backgrounds
    Word Mobile does not display or save backgrounds.
  • Right-to-left text
    Word Mobile opens a document that contains right-to-left text. However, Word Mobile may incorrectly display and incorrectly save the indentations and the alignment.
  • Document protection
    In Word, you can help protect a document from unauthorized changes by using the Protect Document feature. However, Word Mobile does not support displaying a document that uses this feature.
  • Metafiles
    Word Mobile does not retain metafiles. Instead, Word Mobile displays a graphical representation of the object.
  • Page borders
    Word Mobile supports lined page borders. However, Word Mobile does not support artistic page borders. Word Mobile converts the graphics to lined page borders.
  • Documents that have a password
    Word Mobile does not support opening a document that has a password. You must first remove the password in Word on the computer if you want to view the document on the Windows Mobile-based device.
  • Shapes and text boxes
    Word Mobile does not display or save shapes and text boxes.
  • Smart tags
    Word Mobile does not display or save smart tags.

Partially supported features in Word Mobile

The following features are partially supported in Word Mobile:
  • Picture bullets
    Word Mobile supports regular bullets. However, Word Mobile does not support picture bullets. Word Mobile does not display or save picture bullets.
  • Revision marks
    Word Mobile does not retain revision marks. When you open a document that has revision marks in Word Mobile, the document appears as if all revision marks were accepted. When you save the document in Word Mobile, revision marks are lost.
  • Table styles
    When you save a document in Word Mobile, some or all the formatting that is defined in the table style is lost.
  • Underline styles
    Word Mobile does not support all the underline styles. Word Mobile maps the underline styles that are not supported to one of the following supported styles:
    • Regular
    • Dotted
    • Wavy
    • Thick, bold, or wide
  • Pocket Word files
    You can open a .psw file in Word Mobile. However, if you modify a .psw file, you have to save the file by using one of the following file name extensions:
    • .doc
    • .rtf
    • .txt
    • .dot
  • Layout and Author fields
    In Word, the Layout field or the Author field appears one time in a document when the field is inserted in the document. However, in Word Mobile, the Layout field or the Author field appears three times in the document.

Unsupported features that are retained in the document

The following features are not supported on the Windows Mobile-based device but are retained in the document. Therefore, when you open the document on the computer again, these features appear as expected:
  • Fonts and font sizes
    A font that is not supported by the Windows Mobile-based device is mapped to the closest font that is available. The original font is listed on the Windows Mobile-based device. When you modify a document in Word Mobile and open the document on the computer again, the text is displayed in the original font.
  • Footnotes, endnotes, headers, and footers
    Word Mobile does not display footnotes, endnotes, headers, and footers. However, footnotes, endnotes, headers, and footers are retained when you modify and save a document on the Windows Mobile-based device.
  • Lists
    Indented lists are not displayed on the Windows Mobile-based device like indented lists are displayed on the computer. Indented lists are mapped to the closest indentation level that is supported by Word Mobile. However, the list information is retained in the document. Therefore, when you open the document on the computer again, indented lists are displayed in the original form.
  • Page breaks
    Word Mobile does not display breaks between pages. However, all page breaks except for breaks at the end of a document are retained in the document.
