An IntelliMouse Trackball Explorer device that is connected to a USB port on a Windows 2000-based computer is not detected correctly (912081)

SYMPTOMS

When you connect a Microsoft IntelliMouse Trackball Explorer device to a USB port on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer, you may notice the following symptoms:
  • Windows 2000 does not correctly detect the IntelliMouse Trackball Explorer device.
  • The IntelliMouse Trackball Explorer device appears in the Device Manager with a black exclamation point (!) on a yellow field.
Additionally, when you try to update the IntelliMouse Trackball Explorer device, you may receive the following error message:
An error occurred during the installation of the device. The driver selected for the device is not compatible with Windows 2000.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this behavior, follow these steps:
  1. In Device Manager, expand Human Interface Devices, and then double-click the IntelliMouse Trackball Explorer device that is listed.
  2. In the properties dialog box for the IntelliMouse Trackball Explorer device, click the Driver tab, and then click Update Driver.
  3. In the Update Device Driver Wizard dialog box, click Next.
  4. Click Display a list of the known drivers for this device so that I can choose a specific driver, and then click Next.
  5. In the Models list, click USB Human Interface Device, and then click Next.
  6. After the driver is installed, click Finish.
  7. Restart the computer.
You can see that the IntelliMouse Trackball Explorer device is now functioning correctly.
