ActiveSync 4.0 may not detect a Windows Mobile 5.0-based device when you try to connect the device to a computer for the first time (911424)



The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 software for Pocket PCs
  • Microsoft ActiveSync 4.0

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You have a Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0 software for Pocket PC-based device. You try to connect the device to the computer for the first time by using a universal serial bus (USB) cable. In this scenario, Microsoft ActiveSync 4.0 may not detect the device in the Get Connected Wizard.

This issue may occur when the following conditions are true:
  • You connected the Windows Mobile-based device to the computer before ActiveSync 4.0 was installed.
  • The computer enumerates the device without a device driver present.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Disconnect the Windows Mobile 5.0-based device from the USB cable.
  2. Install ActiveSync on the computer.
  3. Reconnect the device to the USB cable when you are prompted by the ActiveSync Setup program.
Note You do not have to remove any devices from Device Manager, and you do not have to modify any registry keys.
