You cannot remotely shut down a computer that is a member of an Active Directory domain by using the Windows Automated Deployment Services default job template (910722)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Windows Server Automated Deployment Services 1.1
- Microsoft Windows Server Automated Deployment Services 1.0
SYMPTOMSConsider the following scenario.
You have a computer that is a member of an Active Directory domain and that has the Microsoft Windows Automated Deployment Services (ADS) Administration agent installed. You disable the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks option on this computer for all the network adapters. In this scenario, you cannot shut down the computer by using the ADS default job template from a computer that has the ADS Controller installed.CAUSEThis problem occurs because the computer that has ADS Controller installed uses the fully qualified domain name (FQDN) of the ADS Administration agent computer when it sends a request to shut down the computer.
When the ADS Administration agent receives the shutdown command from the ADS Controller, the agent calls the InitiateSystemShutdown function. However, the InitiateSystemShutdown function fails when it tries to open a named pipe over a remote procedure call (RPC). Specifically, this function fails if the File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks option is disabled on the ADS Administration agent computer.
Note The ADS Controller computer uses the FQDN because the ADS Administration agent computer is a member of an Active Directory domain.
WORKAROUNDTo work around this problem, do not use the ADS default job template. Note This default job template is named "Shutdown." Instead, create a new job template that uses the Windows Shutdown.exe tool. You must use the /s and /f switches together with the Shutdown.exe tool.
