You cannot submit a form when you configure the FrontPage Server Extensions to send results to an SMTP server (909504)


The information in this article applies to:

  • FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions from Microsoft
  • FrontPage 2000 Server Extensions from Microsoft

SYMPTOMS

You configure a form to send results to an e-mail address in Microsoft FrontPage. Additionally, you configure the FrontPage Server Extensions from Microsoft to send the results to a Simple Message Transfer Protocol (SMTP) server. When you try to submit the form, you receive the following generic error message:
FrontPage Error.
User: please report details to this site's webmaster.
Webmaster: please see the server's application event log for more details.
However, there may not be any errors logged in the event log of the Web server.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the SMTP virtual server is incorrectly configured.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, use one of the following methods.

Method 1: Configure the SMTP virtual server

  1. On the computer that is running the SMTP virtual server, click Start, click Run, type inetmgr, and then click OK.
  2. Right-click Default SMTP Virtual Server, click Properties, click the Access tab, and then click Relay.
  3. Click Only the list below.
  4. Click Add to add the IP address of the Web server.
  5. Click OK two times.
  6. Right-click Default SMTP Virtual Server, and then click Stop.
  7. Right-click Default SMTP Virtual Server, and then click Start.
Note You may have to configure other SMTP virtual server settings. These settings may include IP address bindings, the SMTP Smart Host, and so on.

Method 2: Open port 25

The FrontPage Server Extensions send e-mail messages by establishing a connection to the SMTP server that is specified in the FrontPage Server Extensions settings. If a connection between the Web server and the SMTP server cannot be established, messages cannot be sent.

The default port for the SMTP server is port 25. If a firewall or any Internet security software blocks port 25, the FrontPage Server Extensions may not be able to connect to the SMTP server. Therefore, you must open port 25. Additionally, make sure that you can connect to port 25.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
