Commands are missing when you right-click an item in a library in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and in Windows SharePoint Services (909451)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario. You connect to a Microsoft Office SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal site or to a Microsoft Windows SharePoint Services Web site that is hosted on a port other than port 80. You view a library, such as a document library, in Explorer View. When you right-click an item in the library, you notice that some commands are missing from the menu that appears. Commands that you do not see on the menu include the following:

Print
Scan for viruses
Make Available Offline
Open With

For example, you experience this behavior when you connect to a SharePoint Portal Server 2003 portal site or to a Windows SharePoint Services Web site that uses Secure Sockets Layer (SSL), and you then view a document library in Explorer View. SSL-enabled Web sites use port 443. Port 443 is the default port for HTTPS.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs because the WebClient service in Microsoft Windows does not support a port other than the default port for HTTP (port 80). If the Web site is hosted on a port other than port 80, Explorer View uses the Web Extender Client (WEC) protocol instead of the WebClient service to provide connectivity.

The WEC protocol is a technology that is older than the WebClient service that is included in Microsoft Windows. The WEC protocol does not directly integrate with the Windows operating system. Therefore, it does not detect all the commands that are available on the menu that appears when you right-click an item in a library.
