FIX: An access violation occurs and the Analysis Services service unexpectedly quits during the Startup process in Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services (909393)

This issue specifically applies to the following Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services builds:
  • SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services hotfix build 8.0.1028
  • SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services hotfix build 8.0.2157
Microsoft distributes SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services fixes as one downloadable file. Because the fixes are cumulative, each new release contains all the hotfixes and all the security fixes that were included with the previous SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services fix release.

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services, an access violation occurs and the Analysis Services service unexpectedly quits during the Startup process. This problem occurs after you install SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services hotfix build 8.0.1028 or SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services hotfix build 8.0.2157. You experience this problem when dimensions are loaded during the Startup process.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the Analysis Services server process (Msmdsrv.exe) tries to allocate memory on the heap while dimensions are loading.

RESOLUTION

Hotfix information

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services service pack that contains this hotfix.

Prerequisites

  • Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services Service Pack 3 (SP3) or Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Analysis Services Service Pack 4 (SP4) depending on the current build

Restart information

You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this hotfix. However, the hotfix installation process stops and then restarts the Analysis Services service.

You do not have to change the registry after you apply this hotfix.
