You receive an "INSERT MEDIA" error message when you try to use the Create CD/DVD experience in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (909083)

SYMPTOMS
In Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, when you try to use the Create CD/DVD experience to create a CD or a DVD, you may receive the following error message:
INSERT MEDIA
Please insert writeable media that is compatible with your CD or DVD recorder, and then select Retry. CAUSEThis problem may occur if either of the following conditions is true:
- The wrong type of recordable disc is loaded into the recordable optical drive. For example, if you are trying to create a CD, you should have a recordable CD loaded, and if you are trying to create a DVD, you should have a recordable DVD loaded.
- The computer is using a DVD-RAM drive that was not supported in the initial release of Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. For example, the problem is known to occur when you use the Matsushita DVD-RAM drive model UJ-846S. This drive was not supported in the initial release of Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.

RESOLUTION

Update Rollup 2 for Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 adds support for additional drives, including the Matsushita DVD-RAM drive model UJ-846S. Without these updates installed, the UJ-846S drive will correctly recognize DVD-R, DVD-RW, and DVD-RAM discs. However, the drive will not recognize CD-R, CD-RW, and DVD+RW discs.
To determine the model of optical drive that is installed in the computer, follow these steps:
- Click Start, click Run, type MSINFO32, and then click OK.
- In System Information, expand Components.
- Click CD-ROM.
The model of optical drive is displayed in the Name section.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
