You receive a "0xC103798A" error message when you try to add a server that is running Exchange Server 2003 to an Exchange Server 5.5 site (907433)
The information in this article applies to:
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Enterprise Edition
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 Standard Edition
- Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5
SYMPTOMSWhen you try to add a server that is running Microsoft Exchange Server 2003 to a Microsoft Exchange Server 5.5 site, the Exchange Server 2003 Setup program cannot install the Exchange Server services and the Site Replication Service (SRS). Additionally, in Microsoft Exchange Installation Wizard, you receive an error message that is similar to the following: Setup failed while installing sub-component Exchange server 2003 - Exchange 5.5 Synchronizer with error code 0xC103798A (please consult the installation logs for a detailed description). You may cancel the installation or try the failed setup again. CAUSEThis problem occurs if the Exchange Server 5.5 site name is changed after the Exchange Server organization is switched to a mixed environment. Therefore, the name of the Exchange Server 5.5 site that is used by the Exchange Server 2003 Setup program differs from the name of the corresponding Admin Group in Active Directory. When this problem occurs, the following items appear to be correct: - DNS resolution
- The properties of all objects in Active Directory
- The properties of all objects in the Exchange Server 5.5 directory
RESOLUTIONTo resolve this problem, change the Admin-Display-Name value of the Exchange Server 5.5 site to match the corresponding Admin Group object in Active Directory. To do this, follow these steps. Warning If you use the raw mode of the Exchange Server Administrator program ( admin /r) incorrectly, serious problems may occur that may require you to reinstall Microsoft Windows NT Server, Microsoft Exchange Server, or both. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems that result from using raw mode incorrectly can be solved. Use raw mode at your own risk.
- Start Exchange System Manager.
- Note the name of the Admin Group that corresponds to the Exchange Server 5.5 site.
- Quit Exchange System Manager.
- On a computer that has Exchange Admin installed, click Start, click Run, type cmd, and then click OK.
- Type the following command, and then press ENTER:
Drive:\exchsrvr\bin\admin /raw - In Exchange Admin, locate the Exchange Server 5.5 site to which you want to add an Exchange Server 2003 server.
- On the File menu, click Raw Properties.
- In the Object attributes list, click Admin-Display-Name.
- In the Edit value box, type the name that you noted in step 2. Then, click OK.
- Quit Exchange Admin.
STATUSMicrosoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
