The Disk Cleanup Wizard may not be able to resolve a low disk space condition in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (905938)

SYMPTOMS

When you receive a "Low Disk Space" message on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, you are prompted to run the Disk Cleanup Wizard. However, the Disk Cleanup Wizard may not be able to resolve the low disk space condition if you have many recorded TV programs stored on the hard disk.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the Disk Cleanup Wizard cannot delete TV programs that are recorded by using Media Center Edition.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one or more of the following methods.

Method 1: Manually delete some recorded TV programs when you receive a "Low Disk Space" message

To manually delete some recorded TV programs when you receive a "Low Disk Space" message, follow these steps:
  1. Press the START button on the Media Center remote control, select My TV, and then select Recorded TV.
  2. Use the arrow buttons on the Media Center remote control to select the program that you want to delete.
  3. Select Delete to delete the recorded program from the hard disk.

Method 2: Conserve disk space by changing the Keep settings for your series recordings

To conserve disk space, change the Keep settings for your series recordings to Keep Until Space Needed or to Keep Latest Recordings.

Method 3: Limit the number of programs in a series that are kept at the same time

To limit the number of programs in a series that are kept at the same time, use the Keep Up To setting. For more information, see the "Keep Settings and Managing Disk Space" topic in Media Center Help.

Method 4: Allocate less disk space for recorded TV

To allocate less disk space for recorded TV, follow these steps:
  1. Press the START button on the Media Center remote control, select Settings, select TV, select Recorder, and then select Recorder Storage.
  2. Under Maximum TV Limit, select the minus sign (-) on the screen to decrease the hard disk allocation for recorded TV.
