After you change the location that Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 uses to store recorded TV files, Media Center still uses the original location to store files (905937)

  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

SYMPTOMS

After you change the Recorder Storage location that Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 uses to store recorded TV files, Media Center still uses the original location to store files.

For example, you may not have lots of drive space on the original logical drive that Media Center uses for storage of files. Therefore, you change the Recorder Storage location to a different logical drive. However, when you watch or record Live TV after the change, available free space on the original logical drive continues to decrease.

CAUSE

This problem may occur if the computer has not been restarted after the Recorder Storage location was changed.

When you watch or record Live TV, Media Center stores temporary (*.tmp) files in the following default location:

C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Documents\Recorded TV\TempRec\TempSBE

Note This location may be different, depending on your configuration. For example, the temporary files may be stored in the following location:

C:\WINDOWS\Temp\TempRec\TempSBE

These temporary files can range from several megabytes to over 200 megabytes.

When you change the Recorder Storage location to a different logical drive, Media Center does not change the storage location for temporary files until you restart the computer.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, restart the computer. After the computer is restarted, the computer uses a temporary file location on the same logical drive that you specify for the Recorder Storage location.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
