256986 Description of the Microsoft Windows registry

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You have a computer that is running an x64-based or x86 version of Microsoft Windows Server 2003.
  • This computer has a storage device installed that uses the Storport.sys device driver.
  • You examine this device in Windows to determine the interrupt (IRQ) that is assigned to the device.
When you examine this device, you notice that a different interrupt is specified in the following registry location than is returned by other system information tools such as Device Manager:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\Scsi\Scsi Port number

For example, if you view this registry subkey, you see information that is similar to the following information:
NameTypeData
DriverREG_SZql2300
InterruptREG_DWORD0x00000007
Dma64BitAddressesREG_DWORD0x00000001

However, if you view this same device information by using a system tool such as Device Manager, you see information that is similar to the following information:

IRQ 48 QLogic QLA23xx PCI Fibre Channel Adapter OK

Note Although HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\HARDWARE\DEVICEMAP\Scsi\Scsi Port number contains the wrong value, this configuration does not affect actual operations. The value in Device Manager is the right value.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because of a problem in the Storport.sys device driver that is included with the x64-based and x86 versions of Windows Server 2003.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
