You experience problems when you try to print to a file programmatically in Windows XP (905519)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to print to a file programmatically in Microsoft Windows XP, all the following problems may occur:
  • The print job fails.
  • A print job appears in the print queue, but nothing prints. You cannot delete this print job.
  • The program that tries to print to a file cannot access the file. Program errors occur.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next Windows XP service pack that contains this hotfix.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, restart the Print Spooler service:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type services.msc, and then click OK.
  2. In the Services (Local) pane, right-click Print Spooler, and then click Restart.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
