FIX: Dependent Message Queuing 3.0 clients may not be able to send or receive messages after you apply the MS05-017 security update for Windows XP (905406)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Message Queuing 3.0
  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1

SYMPTOMS

After you apply the MS05-017 security update for Microsoft Windows XP, dependent Microsoft Message Queuing 3.0 clients may not be able to send or receive messages. You may experience this problem on a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 1 (SP1) or an earlier version of Windows XP.

Note Message Queuing is also known as MSMQ.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because the updated version of Message Queuing that is included in the MS05-017 security update tries to write to the log file by using the Mqrtdep.dll file. The Mqrtdep.dll file is not included in the MS05-017 security update. Therefore, dependent clients cannot send or receive messages.

Note Computers that are running Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) use a later version of Message Queuing. The later version writes to the log file by using the Msmqlog.bin file.
