SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Windows XP and in Microsoft Windows Server 2003, Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 does not display some enhanced metafile (EMF) images. Or, Internet Explorer 6 displays these images incorrectly.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Internet Explorer may incorrectly calculate the size of the image.

After you apply this hotfix, follow the steps in the "More Information" section to enable the hotfix by using the IMAGING_EMF_USE_RCLFRAMESIZE_KB905299 registry entry.

MORE INFORMATION

This hotfix resolves display issues when you load EMF files in Internet Explorer. However, when Internet Explorer is next updated, this change will be disabled to comply with other methods for calculating the size of an EMF image. After you update Internet Explorer, you must add the following registry entry for this hotfix to work:

To do this, follow these steps.

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.
  1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  2. Locate and then click one of the following registry subkeys:
    • HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Feature Control
    • HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main\Feature Control
  3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
  4. Type IMAGING_EMF_USE_RCLFRAMESIZE_KB905299, and then press ENTER to name the new entry.
  5. On the Edit menu, click Modify, type 1 in the Value data box, and then click OK.

    Note To disable the hotfix, type 0 in the Value data box.
  6. Quit Registry Editor.
  7. Restart the computer.
