FIX: The Windows CE Terminal Server client may stop responding to user input when audio playback from the Terminal Server host is redirected to the Terminal Server client (905202)


The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows CE .NET 4.2

SYMPTOMS

When audio playback from the Terminal Server host is redirected to the Microsoft Windows CE Terminal Server client, the Terminal Server client may stop responding to user input for a period lasting up to 20 seconds. This problem only occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • Local audio is played at the same time as a short audio clip from the remote session. Examples of local audio are a key click or a touch click.
  • The audio driver is based on the model device driver/platform-dependent driver (MDD/PDD) model for audio driver design. This problem does not occur when you use the unified driver model for the audio driver.

CAUSE

A race condition in the software mixer lets two threads wait on the same event at the same time. However, only one thread is signaled to continue when the event occurs.

Prerequisites

This update is supported only if all previous updates for this product are installed.

Restart requirement

After you install this update, you must perform a clean build of the whole platform. To clean the platform, click Clean on the Build menu. To build the platform, click Build Platform on the Build menu. You do not have to restart the computer after you apply this update.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem without applying this update, use one of the following methods:
  • Use the unified driver model for the audio driver.
  • Disable the software mixer by providing a sample rate that is not valid in the registry.
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Audio\SoftwareMixer]
"SampleRate"=dword:FA00 ; 64KHz, which will not work
