A Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005-based computer cannot hibernate while you are recording Live TV (905005)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

SYMPTOMS

The Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005-based computer cannot enter hibernation. This symptom occurs if you are recording Live TV in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005. If you press the power button on the remote or on the computer, the Stand By option appears. However, a Hibernate option does not appear. If you click Stand By, the computer correctly enters Stand By mode, and the Live TV recording is stopped. This symptom occurs even though you configure the When I press the sleep button on my computer option to Hibernate. The When I press the sleep button on my computer option is located on the Advanced tab in the Power Management tool.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 does not allow the computer to hibernate while Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is recording Live TV.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, schedule recordings by using the Electronic Programming Guide (EPG) instead of by using Live TV. When you schedule recordings by using the EPG, the system may be able to hibernate after Windows XP Media Center completes its recordings.

Note If the system still cannot hibernate, see the "More Information" section.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.

MORE INFORMATION

Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 wakes the computer from hibernation for a scheduled recording that was set up by using the Electronic Program Guide. To configure the computer to automatically hibernate after the recording has completed in the background after resuming to record the Electronic Program Guide, follow these steps:
  1. Click Start, click Run, type powercfg.cpl in the Open box, and then click OK.
  2. On the Power Schemes tab, specify a period of inactivity that you want to elapse before your computer hibernates in the System Hibernates box.
  3. On the Advanced tab, click to select the Prompt for password when computer resumes from standby check box.
  4. Click Apply, and then click OK.
Note On the Power Schemes tab of the Power Options dialog box, you can specify the period of inactivity that you want to elapse before the computer goes on standby or hibernation. However, because there are other events that can reset the system idle timer, the system may not always go on standby or hibernation after the time that you specify. Events that can reset the system idle timer may include paging operations, system updates, event logging, scheduled tasks or third-party services such as antivirus programs.
