SYMPTOMS

When you try to create a bulleted list or a numbered list in Microsoft Word 2002, you receive the following error message:
Microsoft Word has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

When you view the data in the error report, the report contains an error signature that is similar to one of the following error signatures:
   Application name  Application version  Module name  Module version  Offset

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the List Gallery Presets subkey in the registry has become damaged or corrupted.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, rename the List Gallery Presets subkey in the registry. To do this, follow these steps.

Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

Note Following this procedure resets the options in the Bullets and Numbering dialog box to their default settings.
  1. Quit Word 2002.
  2. Click Start, click Run, type regedit, and then click OK.
  3. Locate and then click the following registry subkey:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Word\List Gallery Presets

  4. On the Edit menu, click Rename.
  5. Type My Old List Gallery Presets, and then press ENTER.
  6. On the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor.
