The "Never Dial a Connection" option that you configure in an Internet Explorer Maintenance policy is not implemented in Windows Server 2003 or in Windows XP Professional (900732)

SYMPTOMS

Consider the following scenario:
  • You are using a computer that is running Microsoft Windows Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows XP Professional.
  • You use the Group Policy Object Editor to configure the Never Dial a Connection option in a Microsoft Internet Explorer Maintenance policy.
In this scenario, the Never Dial a Connection option is not implemented when you create a new connection. When you examine the Install.ins file on the computer where you created the policy, the following entries for the Never Dial a Connection option are missing:
  • NoNetAutodial = 0
  • EnableAutodial = 0

RESOLUTION

Important A hotfix is available to resolve this problem. However, this hotfix resolves the problem in the Group Policy Object Editor (Gpedit.msc) and not in the Group Policy Management Console snap-in.

Hotfix installation information

Install the hotfix on the computer where you configured the Internet Explorer Maintenance policy.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, you must manually add two entries to the Install.ins file. To do this, follow these steps on the client computer where you configured the Internet Explorer Maintenance policy:
  1. Open Windows Explorer.
  2. On the Tools menu, click Folder Options, and then click the View tab.
  3. Click Show hidden files and folders.
  4. Close Windows Explorer.
  5. On the domain controller or on the client, start Notepad.
  6. Open the Install.ins file.

    Note By default, the Install.ins file is located in the following folders:

    Domain controller
    %windir%\Sysvol\Sysvol\Domain_Name\Policies\GPOGUID\User\Microsoft\IEAK\

    Client computer
    %windir%\System32\GroupPolicy\User\Microsoft\IEAK\
  7. Under "[Connection Settings]", add the following two entries:
    • NoNetAutodial=0
    • EnableAutodial = 0
  8. Save the file, and then close Notepad.
  9. On the client computer, return the folder view settings that you configured in steps 1 through 3 to the previous settings.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
