You receive an error message on a blue screen if you try to connect a Windows XP-based client computer to a DFS share on a Windows Server 2003-based computer (899856)

SYMPTOMS

You cannot connect a Microsoft Windows XP-based client computer to a Distributed File System (DFS) share on a Microsoft Windows Server 2003-based computer. If you try to connect a Windows XP-based client computer to a DFS share on a Windows Server 2003-based computer, you receive an error message on a blue screen. The error message on a blue screen describes pool corruption in the Mup.sys file.

CAUSE

This issue occurs if the last component of a DFS link target name of a DFS namespace is longer than the DFS link. The DFS namespace can be domain-based or stand-alone.

For example, consider the following scenario. You have the following domain root:

\\Example.com\Myroot

The \\Example.com\Myroot domain root has the following link:

\\Example.com\Myroot\Mylink

This link points to the following link target:

\\Myserver\My_long_target_name_123456789

Note the following names and name length values:

Link: \\Example.com\Myroot\Mylink
Name length: 27
Last component of the link target: My_long_target_name_123456789
Name length: 29

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, increase the length of the link name or reduce the length of last component of the link target name. For example, you can reduce the last component of the link target name that is described in the "Cause" section to to the following:

\\Myserver\My_long_target_name

The link target name length becomes 19. This is shorter than the length of the link name. If you do not want to change the link target name, you can increase the link name length that is described in the "Cause" section to the following:

\\Example.com\Myroot\Mylink123456789

The link name length becomes 36, which is longer than the last component of the link target name.
