SYMPTOMS

When you work with an .art file in a document in one of the Microsoft Office programs that are listed in the "Applies to" section, you may experience one or more of the following issues:
  • When you try to save an .art file from a Web site, the .jpg file type does not appear in the Save As dialog box.
  • A thumbnail preview for the .art file is not available.
  • When you try to open an .art file that you downloaded from the Internet, you receive an error message that is similar to the following:
Sorry, this file cannot be opened.
  • When you try to paste an .art file from a Web site, the image does not appear in the document. A blank box may appear instead of the image.
  • When you try to insert an .art file into a Microsoft PowerPoint presentation, you receive the following error message:
An error occurred while importing this file file_name.
  • When you insert an .art file into an Office document, the quality of the image is decreased.

CAUSE

These issues may occur if the .art file is compressed. An .art file may be compressed if the following conditions are true:
  • You used America Online (AOL) to download the .art file.
  • The AOL software is configured to compress graphics. This configuration is the default configuration in AOL.
Note Graphics files that are downloaded by using AOL are saved as Johnson-Grace compressed images, or .art files.

To resolve these issues, use one of the following methods.
