INTRODUCTION
This article describes the Excel 2003 issues that are fixed in the Excel 2003 post-Service Pack 1 hotfix package that is dated April 28, 2005.

This hotfix package fixes the following issues that were not previously documented in a Microsoft Knowledge Base article:
- When you update a data source for a pivot table in an Excel 2003 workbook, Excel 2003 may unexpectedly quit. Additionally, you may receive an error message that is similar to the following error message:
Microsoft Excel has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

When you view the data in the error report, the error report contains an error signature that is similar to the following:
Application name Application version Module name Module version Offset

Additionally, other program versions, module versions, and offsets are possible.
This issue may occur when all the following conditions are true:
- There are two or more pivot tables in the workbook.
- The pivot tables have distinct data connections.
- The pivot tables contain calculated fields.
- When you run a Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) macro that calls a Workbook property in the WorkbookActivate event to open a data file, Excel 2003 unexpectedly quits. Additionally, you receive the following error message:

This issue may occur when all the following conditions are true:
- You open a worksheet that uses a Volatile function.
Note A volatile function must be recalculated whenever calculation occurs in any cells in the worksheet. - You run a VBA macro that uses the WorkbookActivate event to call a Workbook property, such as the Path property or the FullName property.
- The VBA macro opens a non-Excel data file, such as a .csv file or a .txt file.

Service pack information
This problem was first corrected in Office 2003 Service Pack 2.

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Description of Office 2003 Service Pack 1
- The full-file version of this hotfix is also the administrative version of this hotfix. You can install this version of the hotfix on a computer that is running Office 2003 with Office 2003 SP1 installed or on a computer that is running Office 2003 without Office 2003 SP1 installed. However, we have tested this hotfix more extensively on a computer that is running Office 2003 with Office 2003 SP1 installed than we have on a computer that is running Office 2003 without Office 2003 SP1 installed. If you install this hotfix on a computer that is running Office 2003 without Office 2003 SP1 installed, some file conflicts might occur. We support this configuration, but we do not recommend this configuration.
