How to install a DeLorme Earthmate GPS device in Autoroute, in MapPoint, or in Streets & Trips (896939)

SYMPTOMS

When you connect a DeLorme Earthmate GPS device to use with Microsoft Autoroute, with Microsoft MapPoint, or with Microsoft Streets & Trips, you cannot select the DeLorme GPS device. This issue occurs even though the device is working in the DeLorme Street Atlas program or in the Microsoft HyperTerminal.

CAUSE

This issue may occur if the following conditions are true:
  • The DeLorme GPS device is currently being used with another mapping program.
  • The DeLorme GPS device driver for the USB to Serial converter is not installed correctly.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, follow these steps:
  1. Install the DeLorme USB-to-Serial Driver by using the DeLorme driver disk, and then select the following option during the DeLorme driver software Setup:

    I will be using Earthmate with DeLorme and/or non-DeLorme mapping programs and need to install the USB-to-serial drivers

    Note If the DeLorme driver disk is available, download the driver from the following DeLorme Web page:
  2. When you are prompted to, choose the third-party option, not the Recommended option.
  3. Download and install the GPS Update. To download and install the GPS Update, visit the following DeLorme Web page:
  4. After you download and install the update, follow the instructions for using the USB Earthmate GPS Receiver with Third-Party Software from the following DeLorme Web page:
  5. Configure the GPS Device in Autoroute, in MapPoint, or in Streets & Trips.

    Configure the GPS Device in MapPoint or in Street & Trips

    Microsoft Streets & Trips 2005

    1. Start Streets & Trips 2005.
    2. On the Tools menu, click GPS Task Pane.
    3. In the GPS Task Pane, click Configure GPS Receiver.
    4. Click Scan to have Streets & Trips 2005 find the port that has the GPS device connected.

    Microsoft Streets & Trips 2004 and earlier or Microsoft MapPoint 2004

    1. Start your version of Streets & Trips or start MapPoint 2004.
    2. On the Tools menu, click GPS Task Pane.
    3. In the GPS Task Pane, click Configure GPS Receiver.
    4. Click Communications Port (COM number), and then click OK, where number is the number of the COM port assignment that is listed in Device Manager.

      Note To open Device Manager, click Start, click Run, type devmgmt.msc in the Open box, and then click OK.
