You cannot successfully autodial a dial-up connection in Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 (896479)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005, you cannot successfully autodial a dial-up connection. You receive the following error message:
Dial-up connection is not working. Check the dial-up connection properties.

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 tries to dial the number that is stored in the dial-up networking settings under Network Connections. Typically, the number is set to 999-9999. Dial-up software such as NetZero, Juno, or CompuServe stores dial-up access numbers internally.

RESOLUTION

You must manually connect to the Internet and manually download the third-party dial-up software guide when it is needed.
