A TV show may be unexpectedly blocked in Windows Media Center Edition 2005 (896477)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Windows Media Center Edition 2005, a TV show may be unexpectedly blocked. You may have to enter the parental control password to view a TV show, even though the TV show has a rating equal to the maximum permissible limit that was set by using the parental controls.

CAUSE

This problem may occur when the Program Guide provides an incorrect rating for the TV show. Incorrect ratings in the Program Guide do not match the ratings that the broadcast provides.

RESOLUTION

To help resolve this problem, report the incorrect rating to the Program Guide provider for your service area. To do this, visit following Microsoft Web site:

MORE INFORMATION

Media Center honors the TV rating that the broadcast provides instead of the TV rating that the Program Guide provides. This helps make sure that a TV show is not accidentally shown when the Program Guide contains a rating error.

Sometimes the TV rating that is provided with the TV show is mistakenly set to "None" instead of to "Not Rated." When this situation occurs, the TV show is shown. The "None" rating is used by the Emergency Broadcast System and the Emergency Alert System. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) mandates that TV content with a "None" rating must not be blocked. For more information about FCC regulations, visit the following FCC Web site:
