You receive the ''The requested URL could not be retrieved'' error message when you use your Favorites link to open a Live Meeting session or a Live Meeting Web site (896388)

SYMPTOMS

You receive the following error message when you use your Favorites link to open a Microsoft Office Live Meeting session or a Live Meeting Web site:

The requested URL could not be retrieved.

CAUSE

This issue occurs when the Live Meeting Conference Center changes Live Meeting servers.

Live Meeting has recently changed its Internet domain address from PlaceWare.com to LiveMeeting.com. Although you receive a redirection to the new address, you may not automatically be redirected to the LiveMeeting.com Web site because of the way that your security settings are configured. If the redirection does not point you to the new domain address, you have to update your Favorites link.

Additionally, when you log on to the Live Meeting Conference Center, your browser is redirected to the server that is hosting that conference center. This redirection appears as a server number that follows the "www" in the Web address in your browser.
Typically, the Live Meeting address where you are redirected is in the following format:

https://www##.livemeeting.com/cc/Conference_center

Where ## is the server number that is used by the Live Meeting servers.

Occasionally, a server is offline for upgrades or for other maintenance issues. In this case, your conference center is hosted on a different server.

To join a Live Meeting, you do not have to include the server number in your Live Meeting Web address. When you type the address for your Live Meeting Web site, your browser is redirected to the correct address. This address includes the new or the updated server number after the "www" as is shown earlier in this section.

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, you can use one of the following procedures:
  • Update the saved link, and then replace "placeware" with "livemeeting."
  • Modify the saved link, and then remove the server number from the address.

Update the link

To update the link, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. Click Favorites.
  3. Right-click the Live Meeting favorite link, and then click Properties.
  4. Change "placeware" to "livemeeting."
    For example, if the address is https://www.placeware.com/cc/Conference_center, change the address to https://www.livemeeting.com/cc/Conference_center.
  5. Click Apply. Then, click OK.

Remove the server number

When you remove the server number, the Live Meeting server uses your user name to redirect your browser. Then, the correct Web page is automatically opened.

To remove the server number, follow these steps:
  1. Start Internet Explorer.
  2. Click Favorites.
  3. Right-click your Live Meeting Favorites link, and then click Properties.
  4. Delete the numbers after the "www."
    For example, if the address is https://www94.livemeeting.com/cc/Conference_center, change the address to https://www.livemeeting.com/cc/Conference_center.
  5. Click Apply, and then click OK.
