If a 16-bit PC Card is removed and replaced with another 16-Bit PC Card while Windows XP is in standby or hibernation, the new PC Card may not be correctly recognized when you resume the computer (896360)

SYMPTOMS

While a computer that is running Microsoft Windows XP with Service Pack 2 (SP2) is on standby or in hibernation, you replace a 16-bit PC card with a new 16-bit PC card. After you resume the computer from hibernation or from standby, the new PC card is not detected. Additionally, Device Manager displays the old PC card with a yellow exclamation mark next to the name of the card.

CAUSE

This problem occurs if the old PC card and the new PC card have different voltage values.

RESOLUTION

A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing.
