Windows Movie Maker stops capturing video when you use the DV camera controls in the Video Capture Wizard on a Windows XP-based computer (896205)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Windows XP Professional
  • Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition

SYMPTOMS

You connect a digital video (DV) camera to a USB 2.0 port on a Microsoft Windows XP-based computer, and you use Microsoft Windows Movie Maker to capture video. If you use the DV camera controls that are in the Video Capture Wizard to rewind or to fast forward, Windows Movie Maker may stop capturing video.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following conditions are true:
  • You capture video by using a DV camera that is a USB Video Class (UVC) device.
  • You use a USB 2.0 connection to connect the DV camera to your Windows XP-based computer.
Typically, the problem occurs when you press and hold down the fast-forward button or the rewind button that appears in the Digital video camera controls section of the Video Capture Wizard in Windows Movie Maker.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, follow these steps:
  1. Make sure your DV device is connected to a USB 2.0 port. Then set the camera mode to play recorded video, labeled VTR, or VCR on a DV camera.
  2. Click Start, point to Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Movie Maker.
  3. On the File menu, click Capture Video.
  4. In the Video Capture Wizard, on the Video Capture Device page, click the DV camera that is listed in the Available devices box. If you have only one video device installed on your computer, this wizard page is not displayed. You can go to the next step.
  5. In the Enter a file name for your captured video box, enter a file name for your captured video file. Then, in the Choose a place to save your captured video box, specify a location to save your video, and then click Save.
  6. On the Video Setting page, select the video setting that you want to use to capture video and audio.
  7. On the Capture Method page, click Capture parts of the tape manually.
  8. Locate the video and the audio that you want to capture from your tape by using the controls on your DV camera.

Note Do not use the fast-forward button or the rewind button that appears in the Digital video camera controls section of the Video Capture Wizard.
  9. To start to capture video, click Start Capture. The tape plays automatically, and capturing starts.
  10. When the tape reaches the point at which you want to stop capturing, click Stop Capture.
  11. Repeat steps 8 through 10 for each part of the video tape that you want to capture.
  12. When you have finished capturing video, click Finish to close the Video Capture Wizard. The captured content is imported into a new collection that has the same name as the specified video file.
