You receive a "Not Connected" error message when you try to install Media Center Extender on your Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005-based computer (896029)

SYMPTOMS

When you try to install Media Center Extender for Windows XP Media Center Edition on your Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005-based computer, you may receive the following error message on the Extender device and on the Media Center-based computer:
Not Connected
When you try to connect again, or if you turn off and then turn on the power on the Extender, you may receive the following error message on the Extender:
0020B08
The following error message is logged in the Application event log of the Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005-based computer:

Description:

Unable to start a DCOM Server: {F3A614DC-ABE0-11D2-A441-00C04F795683}. The error: "The system cannot find the file specified. " Happened while starting this command:
C:\Program Files\Messenger\msmsgs.exe -Embedding

CAUSE

This problem may occur if you try to install Media Center Extender for Windows XP Media Center Edition when Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 is installed on a dynamic disk.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, you must format the drives and then install Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 on a basic disc instead of on a dynamic drive. To do this, follow these steps.

Warning All data will be lost when you format the drives. Make sure that you back up any data that you require.
  1. Use the Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005 CD-ROM 1 to start your computer.
  2. On the Welcome to Setup screen, press ENTER.
  3. Press F8 to agree to the license agreement.
  4. Use the arrow keys to select each partition, and then press D to delete the partitions. Repeat this step to remove all partitions.
  5. Do either of the following things:
    • If you want one partition, press C, press ENTER, and then press ENTER again.
    • If you want two partitions, press C, type the size of the first partition that you want in megabytes (MB), and then press ENTER. Press the down arrow to select the non-partitioned space, press C, press ENTER, and then press ENTER again.
  6. When you are prompted to format the partitions, use the arrow keys to select the following option:

    Format the partition using the NTFS file system



    Setup formats the partition. This may take several minutes. After the format has completed, Setup copies files to the hard disk drive.
  7. Follow the remaining steps to set up Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005.
Note after you complete this procedure, do not convert the drive to a dynamic disc. If you do this, the problem that is described in the Symptoms section will occur again.

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
