You receive the "That name is not valid" error message when you use the Analysis ToolPak for Excel 2003 (896014)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Excel 2003

SYMPTOMS

When you use either the Descriptive Statistics tool or the Histogram analysis tool that is included in the Analysis ToolPak add-in in Microsoft Office Excel 2003, you receive the following error message:

That name is not valid.
The analysis tools are used to analyze data on one worksheet and then insert the results onto a different worksheet. The problem occurs when the full name of the workbook is added to the worksheet reference for the source data automatically by Microsoft Office Excel 2003.

For example, the worksheet reference appears as Worksheet!data_range. Then, it becomes [Workbook name.xls]Worksheet!data_range.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the file name for the workbook contains characters other than letters, numbers, underscores, or periods. Additionally, the input data for the Analysis tools is located on one worksheet and the output data for the Analysis tools is located on a different worksheet.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use one of the following procedures:
  • Rename the workbook, and then delete any characters that are not letters, numbers, underscores, or periods.
  • Use the same worksheet for both input and output data.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed in the "Applies to" section.
