When you run Scanpst.exe to perform a repair of your .msnpst file in your e-mail profile, your memory usage increases in Outlook 2002 and Outlook 2003 (892454)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Outlook Connector
  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
  • Microsoft Outlook 2002
  • Microsoft Office Outlook Live
  • MSN Premium

SYMPTOMS

When you run the Inbox Repair Tool (Scanpst.exe) and you try to perform a repair of your .msnpst file in your e-mail profile, your memory usage increases. This problem occurs every time that a Send/Receive function is performed in Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 or Microsoft Outlook 2002. For additional information about the Inbox Repair Tool, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

Note In the latest release of the Microsoft Office Outlook Connector, the .msnpst file name extension has been changed to the .ost file name extension. The symptoms that are described earlier in this article may occur only for an .ost file that is associated with an Outlook Connector account but not with a Microsoft Exchange account. For example, your Microsoft MSN Hotmail account or your Microsoft MSN account may exhibit these types of symptoms.

WORKAROUND

Do not use the Scanpst.exe to repair your .msnpst file. If you suspect problems with the file, delete the .msnpst file in Microsoft Windows Explorer. Then, restart Microsoft Outlook. The .msnpst file will be automatically recreated.

Note The .msnpst file is located in the following folder:

C:\Documents and Settings\username\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Outlook
