When you use Outlook to delete Hotmail messages or MSN messages, the deleted messages do not appear in the Trash Can of the Hotmail account or the MSN account (892448)

The information in this article applies to:

  • Microsoft Office Outlook 2003
  • Microsoft Outlook 2002
  • Microsoft Office Outlook Connector
  • Microsoft Office Outlook Live
  • MSN Hotmail
  • MSN Premium

SYMPTOMS

You use Microsoft Outlook with your MSN Hotmail account or with your MSN, The Microsoft Network, account. If you use Outlook to delete Hotmail messages or MSN messages, the deleted messages do not appear in the Trash Can of the Hotmail account or the MSN account when you view the account in your Web browser.

CAUSE

This issue occurs because messages that are deleted in Outlook are moved to the Deleted Items folder of the Exchange store. The deleted messages are not replicated to an individual e-mail account that has been added to Outlook, such as Hotmail or MSN.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods depending on your situation:
  • Upgrade the Microsoft Office Outlook Connector to the latest version.
  • Upgrade to Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 Service Pack 1 or a later version. For additional information about the latest service pack for Office 2003, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

WORKAROUND

To work around this issue, move the deleted messages from the Deleted Items folder in Outlook to the corresponding folder of your Hotmail e-mail account or your MSN e-mail account. Then, press F9 to send and receive messages and to sync the e-mail accounts.

MORE INFORMATION

The reverse of this issue does not occur. That is, if you use your Web browser to delete a message in your Hotmail e-mail account or in your MSN e-mail account, the deleted message appears in the Deleted Items folder in Outlook. The issue that is described in the "Symptoms" section occurs only if the primary e-mail account in Outlook is an Exchange e-mail account.

In an Outlook profile where there is no Exchange e-mail account, the Hotmail e-mail account or the MSN e-mail account is the primary account. Therefore, all deleted messages are sent to the Deleted Items folder of the appropriate account. This behavior occurs regardless of whether the account is a primary account or a secondary account.
