SYMPTOMS
You try to use a 16-bit application that is running on a Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 guest operating system to open a file. This file is in a shared folder on the host operating system. You find that the file may not open. When this behavior occurs, you may receive one of the following error messages:
File not found
The directory could not be opened.
RESOLUTION
A supported hotfix is now available from Microsoft, but it is only intended to correct the problem that is described in this article. Only apply it to systems that are experiencing this specific problem. This hotfix may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by this problem, we recommend that you wait for the next service pack that contains this hotfix.

The 5.3 version of this hotfix has the file attributes (or later file attributes) that are listed in the following table. The dates and times for these files are listed in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). When you view the file information, it is converted to local time. To find the difference between UTC and local time, use the
Time Zone tab in the Date and Time item in Control Panel.

WORKAROUND
This problem only occurs when the functionality to share folders that is included in Virtual Machine Additions is used to share the folder on the host operating system. To avoid this problem, use the net share command to share the folder on the host operating system. To do this, follow these steps:
- Install an internal or an external network in the virtual machine configuration.
- On the host computer, share the folder that you want to access from the network.
- In the guest operating system, click Start, click Run, and then type the following:
net use driveletter: \\host-name\share-name
- Click OK.
