SYMPTOMS

When you try to play a media file in Microsoft Windows Media Player 7.1, the file does not play, and you receive the following error message:

0xc00d2711 (NS_E_DRM_INVALID_APPLICATION)

CAUSE

This issue may occur when the following conditions are true:

The file that you are trying to play is a protected file that requires digital rights management (DRM) individualization 2.5.
You are using Windows Media Player 7.1 on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer.

Windows Media Player 7.1 on a Microsoft Windows 2000-based computer does not support DRM individualization 2.5.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this issue, upgrade to Windows Media Player 9 or a later version.
